Position SummaryProvide specialized counseling and related guidance services for the normal, developmental needs of all the pupils for whom he/she is responsible by providing opportunities for each to experience an accepting, non-evaluative relationship in which better understanding of himself/herself and his/her environment is acquired, and to know the relationship between them.

REPORTS TO: School Principal

Required Qualifications

  • Georgia Standard Professional Certificate Requirements:
  • Completion of a state-approved certification preparation program in School Counseling at the

masterā€™s degree level or higher, or completion of a masterā€™s degree or higher in a counseling

area and submission of a valid National Certified School Counselor (NCSC) credential issued

by the National Board of Certified Counselors; or Completion of a masterā€™s degree or higher in

a counseling area and submission of a valid State of Georgia Professional Counselorā€™s license

issued by the Professional Licensing Boards Division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

  • Experience working with a diverse group of people.
  • Embodies the core values of the district; relational, purposeful, reflective, resourceful,

courageous, and accountable.

  • Must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential function of the position. When appropriate, reasonable

functions of the position.

  • Must be able to provide a criminal background check with results that adhere to Tattnall County Board of

Education Policy GAK(1).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a certified School Counselor.
  • Experience in another counseling area, or a Master of Social Work degree.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Participates in monthly districtwide Counselor Professional Learning Communities (PLC).
  • Assists with the development of a positive climate and culture within the assigned school and counseling

department.

  • Promotes and encourages students and staff to utilize available counseling services.
  • Provides both direct and indirect services to students.
  • Provides school counseling services through individual, small group, or large group settings.
  • Aligns the implementation of Georgia Student Competencies with the three domains of the national ASCA

standards: Academic Achievement, Career Readiness, and Social / Emotional Well-Being.

  • Aligns the implementation of Georgia Student Competencies with the following four components of the three

ASCA domains: Classroom Guidance, Individual Student Planning, Responsive Services, and Indirect Student

Services.

  • Collaborates with external mental health providers who have a Memorandum of Understanding to provide

services to students in the school setting.

  • Adheres to and documents established system policies and procedures for scheduling and facilitating school

counseling services.

  • Adheres to all mandated reporting policies
  • Obtains parental / guardian permission and provides ongoing collaboration with parents / guardians and external

service providers.

  • Orients new students to school procedures.
  • Obtains and disseminates occupational, college, and postsecondary training information to students and parents

as applicable.

  • Cooperates with and provides input into Tier of Intervention process, Student Support Team, Student Assistance

Program, and special education meetings regarding individual students.

  • Confers with parents and arranges parent/teacher conferences as needed.
  • Assists administration with registration and scheduling process when necessary.
  • Maintains liaison and cooperative working relations with pupil, personnel, and agencies providing specialized

services to students.

  • Assists students in developing test taking skills in preparation for standardized group testing.
  • Assists students, parents, and staff in interpreting these scores and in identifying strategies for improvement.
  • Supervises student records and protects their confidentiality.
  • Maintains records and makes required reports in a timely fashion.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

Performance Factors

  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and or a

negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of

force greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated light work.

  • Interaction with Others: Ability to maintain, on a regular and consistent basis, relationships that are characterized

by high expectations, teamwork, and collaboration. Ability to be flexible relative to daily routines. Ability to

demonstrate sensitivity to the differences among diverse populations.

  • Concentration: Ability to maintain workflow and thought processes in the presence of frequent distractions. Ability

to ignore irrelevant sights or sounds and intrusive thoughts or stimuli. Ability to manage multiple tasks

simultaneously with only few or no errors.

  • Stressful Circ*mstances: Ability to produce quality work when short or unexpected deadlines are presented.

Ability to adjust work processes without incident when new and unexpected directions are given relative to a

project that may be in process. Ability to maintain composure and not compound a situation when interacting with

persons who may be angry, demanding or otherwise less than polite.

  • Independent Judgment: Ability to complete work tasks without being given precise directions relative to work

steps or the final project.

  • Organizational Skills: Ability to establish priorities, simultaneously manage multiple tasks; and deliver a quality

work product by a designated deadline.

  • Public Contact: Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with superiors,

colleagues, parents, and other individuals within and external to the school system. Ability to demonstrate

professionalism while interacting with others and to maintain constructive working relationships.

  • Attendance and Dependability: Ability to report to work at the scheduled time and to seldom be absent from

work. Demonstrate prompt and regular work attendance. Process appropriate paperwork to authorize absences

in accordance with school system procedures. Ability to complete work in a timely, accurate manner and to be

conscientious about work performance.

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually by the Superintendent or Principal or designated supervisor.
