Inside Wayne Rooney’s real estate portfolio: the former Man Utd football player and Birmingham City manager grew up in Liverpool council housing – and now has multiple properties around the world
Wayne Rooney has come a long way from the tiny Liverpool council home he grew up in, with the football icon now calling several houses around the world home.
The star 39-year-old star is worth an eye-watering US$170 million according to Celebrity Net Worth, and has an impressive property portfolio.
From mansions that “resemble supermarkets” to holiday homes abroad in the US and the Caribbean, here is a look at some of the countries Rooney owns homes in.
Cheshire, England
The crown jewel in Rooney’s property collection is reportedly his Cheshire mansion. The six-bedroom family home for the star, his wife Coleen and their four kids was built from the ground up at a cost of around US$25 million, according to local paper Cheshire Live.
It includes a football pitch, an indoor swimming pool, two fishing lakes, a cinema, a wine cellar, a snooker room and a massive garage for Rooney’s luxury car collection, per UK media.
The home has not been without controversy, with the star reportedly not being allowed to install floodlights because of the mansion’s rural location, according to the Derby Telegraph. The manor was also jokingly compared to a Morrisons supermarket megastore for its boxy appearance when photos of it being built first appeared online, per the Manchester Evening News.
It is also reported to have two separate lifts, one for the family and another for guests, as well as a panic room.
The panic room was reportedly a special request after a 2016 break-in at the family’s previous US$7.5 million home in Prestbury, Cheshire, noted Metro UK.
The Prestbury home, where the Rooney family lived for well over a decade, had six en suite bedrooms, an indoor swimming pool, a cinema, a triple garage and a golf simulator. It sold for US$4.6 million in 2022, per UK media.
Barbados, Caribbean
When the often rainy northwest England gets too much for the Rooney clan, they can escape to Barbados.
The family reportedly own a Barbados villa in the prestigious Royal Westmoreland estate that they bought in 2010 for US$6.3 million, per The Standard. Business Insider valued it a few years later at US$8.4 million.
The home reportedly boasts multiple bedrooms, an infinity pool, a guest cottage and incredible sea views from most parts of the home.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the couple rent out the property when they are not using it – for a cool US$32,000 a week.
Florida, USA
Rooney also snapped up a US$530,000 waterfront flat in the sunny US state of Florida, reported Business Insider.
Famous Luxury reported that the Harbor Pointe, Port Charlotte pad was bought in 2007 and has three bedrooms, a master suite, a home gym and access to luxury resort pools.
The property’s price nosedived during the 2008 recession and many in the area sold their homes. SNL24 reported in 2019 that the flat was still on Rooney’s books and was being rented out.
Maryland, USA
When Rooney joined DC United in America in 2018, his family was rumoured to be prowling the Washington property market for a multimillion-dollar mansion. But the footballer’s wife was reportedly not keen on the city and instead they moved to Bethesda, Maryland, a 50 minute drive away, reported The Washington Post.
While not much is known about the home, a source told UK media it was “a massive house and it’s beautiful”.
Merseyside, England
Rooney may have been one of the most talked-about teenage footballers on the planet in 2004, but he was focused on securing his family home, buying the Croxteth council house he grew up in. He had it stripped, renovated, and added a conservatory, according to the Liverpool Echo.
The Independent estimated the cost of renovating the house at US$12,500 and reported at the time that Rooney’s cousin would be using it.
The purchase was significantly cheaper than a US$1.8 million mansion in Formby bought by Rooney a few months prior, per the same source. The home had six bedrooms, a swimming pool and 2.1 metre-high walls for privacy from the growing army of paparazzi trying to capture Rooney’s every move.
The Liverpool Echo that reported Rooney also bought his parents a US$750,000 home in West Derby’s Sandfield Park that same year.
Algarve, Portugal
According to Portugal Residency Advisors, Rooney bought a villa in the prestigious Algarve area of southern Portugal worth US$6.3 million in 2017.
The region is known for its beautiful beaches, luxurious resorts and golf courses.
The Rooney family frequented the area on holiday before they bought their own home there. The pad was reportedly a gift to his wife Coleen in 2017, according to Portugal Resident. It apparently has five bedrooms, a games room, gym, cinema, swimming pool and a view of the golf course.
